Will PTAP pay for the cost of my research with photonic prototypes provided by PTAP?
  • PTAP does not pay for research activities. Researchers are expected to develop their own source of funds. PTAP's sole function is to identify, and acquire pre-commercial photonic prototypes and to provide them to researchers.

Will I be able to publish my research results?

  • PTAP encourages researchers who obtain photonic prototypes through the program to publish their research results. The only constraints are that PTAP is to be acknowledged as the provider of the prototype, and that the device manufacturer's name cannot be disclosed without the manufacturer's prior written permission.

Do I have to return the device to PTAP after I complete my research?

  • No, you do not have to return the device. However, as stipulated in the PTAP Recipients Guidelines, which you agree to follow when you sign the Enrollment Form, the device cannot be sold, transferred, or incorporated into a product that is not used for research at the device recipient's facility.

Can I buy the pre-commercial device from PTAP and bypass the solicitation process?

  • Yes, you may purchase pre-commercial devices from PTAP using your own research funds so long as you complete and sign the enrollment form, which indicates that you agree to abide with PTAP Recipient Guidelines.

What if a device is available commercially, but I cannot get it from the supplier. Can PTAP procure the device for me?

  • No, PTAP's role is strictly with pre-commercial devices. Pre-commercial devices, include those that a supplier may be sampling to prospective customers, but is not yet selling them in the open market.

What if a prototype is available only from a foreign company?

  • PTAP can try and obtain the devices from foreign sources.

I am a researcher at a non-U. S. Academic Institution. Can I obtain a pre-commercial prototype through PTAP?

  • Currently PTAP is a U. S. domestic program. We are, however, exploring the possibilities of expanding the program to include foreign institutions and brokers.
