OIDA Manufacturing and Innovation Forum

April 16-17, 2008 - Doubletree San Jose

This forum will identify 10-year strategic trends for optoelectronics manufacturing and innovation in optoelectronics.

Manufacturing in the 21st Century (Day 1)

The pursuit of lower cost manufacturing and the strengthening of the Asian markets have changed the manufacturing landscape for optoelectronics products. Optoelectronics is used in diverse market segments such as consumer electronics, communications, defense, industrial, and transportation/aerospace. Each sector has different requirements and demands on cost, time to market, quality, integration and complexity, and is subject to different international and local trade regulations. This important and timely forum will focus on the following:

Automation or optical integration within the optoelectronics manufacturing field.

  • The supply chain and the economics of manufacturing in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
  • The implications of offshore manufacturing on both the U.S. defense and commercial market sectors within the different fields of optoelectronics.

Innovation in Optoelectronics (Day 2)

Looking forward, there are major questions regarding future innovation for the optoelectronics industry in North America. (Innovation is defined here as the commercialization of research results). These questions, and associated issues and possible paths forward, will be the focus of this one-day forum. Key questions include:

  • How will the precipitous decline in industrial research and associated focus on near-term development impact innovation and new-product development in the coming years?
  • Can the extensive university/academic research base be more closely coupled to industry to accelerate innovation? Which collaboration approaches should be pursued?
