OIDA Members CyOptics and Kotura Win $5.9m ATP Grant
OIDA guidance termed ‘instrumental’ in winning proposal
Washington, DC – October 9th, 2007 — Among the recipients of the 2007 Advanced Technology Program (ATP) grants awarded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are two members of the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA) – CyOptics, Inc. (Breinigsville, Pa) and Kotura, Inc. (Monterey Park, Calif.). NIST- ATP granted $5.9m to CyOptics and Kotura for development of Terabit Photonic Integrated Circuits (TERAPICS™). The two companies are jointly developing optical components that can transmit and receive up to one terabit of data per second over one single-mode fiber, greatly reducing the complexity and cost in high-capacity optical networks. ATP invests in higher-risk but achievable projects that can advance the competitiveness of American industry through technical innovation with national economic benefits.
"OIDA is extremely excited for CyOptics and Kotura,” said Dr. Michael Lebby, OIDA president and CEO. "Our charter as a trade association is to advance the competitiveness of our member companies, and a large part of our mission is to provide the support and information services our members need to allow them to identify and pursue opportunities such as the ATP program. We believe strongly in our members' abilities to enable advances in technology and are pleased to see them recognized by NIST."
"Without OIDA’s assistance, we would not have known about this year’s proposal cycle," said Ed Coringrato, CEO of CyOptics. "OIDA offers many opportunities for us to participate in industry seminars, technology roadmaps, and promote our technologies"
"The short time frame of this year’s proposal cycle made OIDA’s assistance instrumental for getting an effective proposal together on time” said Jean-Louis Malinge, CEO of Kotura. "OIDA offers lots of opportunities for member companies. For instance, we recently joined OIDA’s new Silicon Photonics Alliance, the first formal Community of Interest with the OIDA to expand the market adoption of silicon photonics technology."
About OIDA
The Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA) is a Washington DC-based, not-for-profit association that serves as the nexus for vision, transformation, and growth of the optoelectronics industry. OIDA advances the competitiveness of its members by focusing on the business of technology, not just technology itself. OIDA members include the leading providers of optoelectronic components and systems enabled by optoelectronics, as well as universities and research institutions. OIDA provides roadmaps, reports, and market data for the optoelectronics industry, serves as the voice of industry to government and academia, acts as liaison with other optoelectronic industry associations worldwide, and provides a network for the exchange of ideas and information within the optoelectronics community. OIDA can found on the associations website: www.oida.org.
About CyOptics
Found in 1999, CyOptics designs, develops and markets a full line of InP optical chips and components for integration into access, metro and long-haul communications systems. The company also provides complete contract design, foundry and packaging services. CyOptics is an industry leader in both hybrid integration using different elements in a single package and monolithic integration on a single chip. Manufacture is enabled by an automated "nano-tech” capable assembly and test process that delivers best performance, uniformity and cost. The Company's wafer/chip fabrication operations are located in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, and its planar automated packaging and testing operations are located in Matamoros, Mexico. CyOptics is ISO 9001:2000 certified. For more information, please visit http://www.cyoptics.com or call 1-484-397-2061.
About Kotura
Kotura, a world wide leader in silicon photonics, designs, manufactures and markets CMOS optical components throughout the communications industry. Kotura has been in mass production of silicon photonics components for more than three years and previously announced a two-year supply agreement with Alcatel-Lucent for its Ultra Fast Variable Optical Attenuator (VOA) Arrays. Kotura is also an active participant in the IEEE 802.3 Higher Speed Study Group and in the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). About ATP
The Advanced Technology Program (ATP) bridges the gap between the research lab and the market place, stimulating prosperity through innovation. Through partnerships with the private sector, ATP's early stage investment is accelerating the development of innovative technologies that promise significant commercial payoffs and widespread benefits for the nation. As part of the highly regarded National Institute of Standards and Technology, the ATP is changing the way industry approaches R&D, providing a mechanism for industry to extend its technological reach and push out the envelope of what can be attempted.
